A quick guide from what we see in the field: if your plant prints full-color branding on corrugated and kraft, the Epson platform with five colors is the workhorse most customers pick. Step 3 — Size the Print Width to Your Largest Selling Box
Print width is the specification buyers most often get wrong, because they size it to their average box instead of their largest box. If your biggest selling carton is 480 mm wide and the machine prints 400 mm, that carton simply cannot go through it — you would have to rotate the design or turn the order away. We ask customers to bring us their top five best-selling box dimensions, and we size the machine to the largest of the five.
In the Epson line, that means choosing between 264 mm, 400 mm, and 525 mm standard widths, with wider single-pass configurations reaching 795 mm and 1050 mm for large-format work. The Seiko line steps up to 1800 mm for oversized sheets. The rule is simple: the machine width must cover the largest flat sheet you actually sell, with a small margin for bleed and registration — never the other way around.
Step 4 — Choose the Speed Mode That Matches Your Peak Load
Speed in digital packaging printing comes in two completely different languages, and confusing them is the fastest way to misconfigure a purchase. Step 5 — Check the Ink Channels Before You Commit
Color capability decides which jobs a digital printing machine can accept, and this is where we see buyers get surprised later. If you print on natural brown kraft, a four-color machine will give you dull, muddy graphics — brown board eats the brightness of CMYK ink. The fix is a fifth channel: white. With CMYK + White, the machine lays down an opaque white base first and prints color on top, so brand colors stay vivid on brown stock.
Before you choose, list the substrates your customers actually send you. If kraft, honeycomb board, or any brown material appears in the mix, budget for the five-color configuration from day one. Retrofitting white ink capability later is a much bigger conversation than choosing it at order time.
